Press Release No 20 – Demonetisation of Fijis Old Design Flora and Fauna Banknotes

The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) wishes to advise the public that following the introduction of the new polymer banknotes into circulation from 02 January 2026, the old design flora and fauna banknotes have now been gazetted for demonetisation effective 01 January 2027. Accordingly, businesses will not be obliged to accept the old banknotes as payment for goods and services after 31 December 2026.
Governor of the RBF, Mr Ariff Ali highlighted that as of 31 July 2026, 72.3% of the old banknotes in circulation have been recalled and acknowledged the public for their support in facilitating a smooth and gradual transition to the use of new polymer banknotes. Governor Ali explained that recall of old banknotes is an essential process for central banks in circumventing public confusion, maintaining banknote quality and mitigating counterfeiting.
Members of the public are reminded that after 31 December 2026, only the Reserve Bank of Fiji will give value for your old banknotes.
