Press Release No 06 – Commencement of the Credit Union Act 2025
The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) wishes to announce the commencement of the Credit Union Act 2025 (Act) effective from 01 March 2026, as announced by the Minister Finance, Commerce and Business Development Honourable Esrom Immanuel on 10 February 2026.
This follows extensive industry consultations on the Credit Union Bill conducted by the RBF and the Parliamentary Standing Committee whereby the Republic of Fiji Parliament passed the motion for enactment of the Act during the December 2025 Parliamentary session.
The central bank is now mandated by the Credit Union Act 2025 to administer and perform all functions assigned to it by the Credit Union Act 2025. These functions include the registration and licensing of entities that carry out credit union business.
In line with the 12 month transitional period stipulated under section 169 of the Credit Union Act 2025, the RBF will shortly commence engagement with the relevant Credit Unions and Cooperatives to ensure a smooth transition.
All Credit Unions and Cooperatives undertaking credit union business are informed to continue to operate their business normally during this transition period, until such time the RBF determines and approves its stance on licensing and registration.
