The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the United Nations Environment Programme, with support from the NDC Partnership, officially launched Fiji’s Sustainable Finance Roadmap today. This landmark initiative sets a strategic vision for aligning the Fijian financial system with national climate ambitions, and Fiji’s collective efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Sustainable Finance Roadmap is built on three key pillars of:
In his opening remarks at the launch, Dr Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change highlighted the importance of integrating climate resilience into financial decision-making, stating that “The groundwork has been completed and the foundation laid. Going forward, no single hand carries the weight of progress and believe me when I say this no particular individual, ministry, organisation, or agency has the sole responsibility for implementation. It is together, through shared commitment and collaboration, that we will bring this roadmap to life.”
In his keynote address, RBF Governor Ariff Ali, underscored the urgency of the initiative, highlighting that “We are launching this Roadmap at a very critical time, when we are continuously faced with a reality defined by uncertainty due to interconnected global challenges related to climate risks, economic vulnerabilities and social inequalities.”
The development of the Roadmap has been the result of extensive collaboration amongst multiple industry stakeholders including the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Finance, Association of Banks in Fiji, Fiji Development Bank, German Agency for International Cooperation and Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants. Looking ahead, the RBF will work closely with the project team to raise awareness on the Roadmap and build capacity across targeted institutions to support its implementation. Reaffirming the RBF’s commitment, Governor Ali concluded that “sustainable finance is no longer optional, t is the foundation of a resilient, inclusive, and thriving economy.”
The launch of the Roadmap marks a pivotal step in Fiji’s journey toward a climate-resilient future, where finance becomes a powerful enabler of sustainable development for all. To view the Roadmap Please Click Here.
